Restoring Your Bite with Bruxism/TMJ Treatment
While the main goal of general dental care is to prevent issues from affecting your oral health, it sometimes requires actively addressing concerns that are currently threatening it. Besides tooth decay and gum disease, such issues can include bruxism (chronic teeth-grinding) and/or TMJ disorder (a dysfunction in your jaw’s joints). Bite issues such as bruxism and TMJ disorder can gradually deteriorate your oral health several ways, from wearing down your healthy tooth structure to making it increasingly more difficult to bite and chew your food. For many patients, we can correct bruxism and/or TMJ disorder with highly personalized treatment such as a custom-designed oral appliance.
How a Custom-Designed Appliance Works
Bruxism and TMJ disorder can be caused by a variety of issues, many of which involve a discrepancy in the alignment of your teeth, jaw, or TMJs (temporomandibular joints). In many cases, we can help alleviate the discomfort and promote better alignment with the help of a custom-designed oral appliance. Similar to a mouthguard worn for sports, but smaller and more comfortable, the appliance can be designed to support your lower jaw as you sleep to alleviate stress on your TMJs. The appliance can also be designed to protect your teeth from grinding against each other while you sleep, preventing the tooth wear and damage that can occur from nighttime bruxism.
